Fly fishing Spring creek state college
Spring Creek, located entirely within Centre County, Pennsylvania, originates at the foot of Tussey Mountain, near Boalsburg. As the state’s top brown trout fishery, it boasts the highest concentration of wild trout per mile of any stream in Pennsylvania. Several limestone tributaries—including Cedar Run, Slab Cabin Run, Logan Branch, and Buffalo Run—each known for their own excellent wild trout populations, feed Spring Creek with cool, nutrient-rich water that enhances the creek’s already ideal trout habitat. The most productive section of Spring Creek runs for 20 miles to its junction with Bald Eagle Creek in Milesburg, though healthy populations of both wild and stocked trout can be found well below this confluence. While the average trout size ranges from 10 to 12 inches, don’t be deceived by these smaller fish. Spring Creek supports a solid population of trout from 13 to 20 inches, with even larger specimens present. The entire creek, from source to mouth, is designated as catch-and-release, ensuring that these fish remain in the water, awaiting your challenge. Renowned anglers like George Harvey, Joe Humphreys, and Charlie Meck have fished here, making it a legendary destination. Bring your best nymphs, dry flies, and streamers, and see if your skills can match those of these Pennsylvania fishing legends.
