Fly fishing the clarion river
The Clarion River, located in the northwestern part of Pennsylvania, is characterized by winding bends, steep, wooded hills, and striking rock formations. It flows through some of the state’s most picturesque natural areas, including the Allegheny National Forest, Clear Creek and Cook Forest state parks, and various state game lands.
The Clarion River’s recovery is a remarkable environmental success. After enduring nearly 200 years of logging and industrial use, and being essentially considered “dead” for half a century, it was designated a National Wild and Scenic River in 1996, gaining recognition for its natural beauty and recreational value. Its comeback has been so impressive that it was named “Pennsylvania’s River of the Year” by the Pennsylvania Organization for Waterways and Rivers in 2019, marking the fourth time it has earned this title since 1983.
The river’s revival is the result of dedicated efforts by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and numerous local groups and businesses. For over 40 years, the Conservancy has worked to protect the land and waters of the Clarion River watershed. The substantial improvements in water quality, combined with the region’s scenic beauty, make its recognition well deserved. As part of the community supporting these efforts, we are excited to share the story of the Clarion River’s restoration and the critical role that leadership supporters like you play in its success.
Stretching for 110 miles, the Clarion River begins in the headwaters of Elk and McKean counties, flowing southwest and forming the boundary between Forest and Jefferson counties. It eventually merges with the Allegheny River south of Foxburg in Clarion County. The river’s relatively shallow waters make it a favorite destination for paddling and fishing. Its winding curves and the steep hillsides that rise directly from the banks create a sense of isolation and tranquility, offering limited views of the surrounding landscape.
The Clarion River has become in recent years known for its large brown trout population. the East branch of the Clarion River is a tailwater, and a really good one. It offers wild brown trout as well as rainbow trout. This is beautiful, serene and quiet we offer walk and we trips to both the east branch and the main stem below, Johnsonburg.
