Fly fishing The Laurel Highlands
The Laurel Highlands: A Premier Fly Fishing Destination in Pennsylvania
The Laurel Highlands stands out as one of Pennsylvania’s most treasured fishing spots. Many biologists consider it home to some of the state’s most diverse and abundant wild fish populations. However, many of the streams in this area demand a fair amount of casting skill, making it a great challenge for those looking to test their angling abilities.
For anglers seeking a challenge, the streams here are home to native Brook trout, wild Brown trout, wild Rainbow trout, and the elusive wild Tiger trout. Stealth and precision are key when fishing these waters, as the fish can be elusive and require careful approach.
One of the standout destinations is Loyal Hanna Creek, which offers a beautiful stocked fishery. Located near downtown Ligonier, it’s not far from the historic Fort Ligonier, a must-see while visiting the area. Indian Creek and its tributaries also hold wild fish populations, and although the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission stocks some of these streams, they aren’t as diverse as other parts of the state, such as the limestone streams in central Pennsylvania.
Despite the lower fish diversity, this region boasts a healthy population of Caddis, Stoneflies, and various species of Mayflies, all of which are an essential part of the local ecosystem. These insects are often found drifting downstream, only to be eaten by the local fish.
Another gem in the Laurel Highlands is Laurel Hill Creek, a fantastic spot for both novice and experienced anglers looking to learn or improve their fly fishing skills. The creek is stocked with sizable Rainbow and Brown trout, offering a great opportunity for a successful day on the water.
There are many streams in the Laurel Highlands to pursue with a fly rod in hand. The link below will take you to Laurel Highlands trout Trail, that still only a handful of streams.
